I'm so glad the stories confirmed my suspicions that Meres is an expert driver ^_^ since I reference it in my fic. It also makes me happy to see Callan admiring his BF's talents. Like, Callan/Meres squabble a lot, but outside each other's presence, they're always talking up the the other person's skills and expertise. It's the whole "You like him - I detest him" thing from the TV show, LOL.
File on a Darling Daughter is the only story with Meres as a torturer (and the violence is "off-screen"). What about it fascinates you? I like his over-the-top charm... and how creative he gets. But the thing that made that scene stand out to me was Callan's nonchalance. I mean, Callan could have easily intimidated the guy into spilling the beans, but he hates drug dealers so much that he basically wrapped Billy up in a little bow and presented him to Meres without the slightest twinge of conscience.
Yeah, File on a Harassed Hunter is kind of a mess. The story starts out strong, but loses the plot halfway through, and the ending is rather disappointing. (Hunter isn't even there to witness the final killing, contrary to his earlier claims). I have no idea how the Section can recruit a chief without a family - stake out orphanages? In general, Mitchell overuses the "Hunter has a secret relative" thing. It's a surprise the first time, but then quickly gets old.
I always thought the rule that Hunter can't leave the office was a reaction to Goodliffe!Hunter getting killed. Like in order to leave, he has to get authorization and an armored vehicle and a whole cadre of security staff. Not just hop in his car with a junior agent. But the TV show didn't explain that very well.
I mean, Mitchell was an old white fart writing in the 60's, so I expected it. But it still pisses me off. At this point, I basically can't enjoy any stories that treat the female characters like sexy cardboard cutouts, because it bothers me so much that I stop following the plot. But Cynthia and Jane are pretty cool. I'd love to see Cynthia return - she's a real fighter (Callan is damn strong, and he compares her grip to a wrestler's) - and Jane, while too moral for the Section, could prove an interesting partner for Callan... or counterpoint to her uncle. I tell myself the real reason she dressed in shabby clothing is as a disguise! It worked on Callan, didn't it? He wasted several minutes dissecting her fashion sense instead of, you know, doing actual spy stuff.
