I've read both collections! (Thank you, Amazon Prime.) God, File on a Loving Sister is PAINFUL. Some of the best stuff in the stories is Lonely, whose interaction with Callan is just hilarious, just like it is in the show.

From File on a Kindly Colonel:

"The colonel and his lovely bride. And that bird Keino. He's not lovely at all. Do you know - I don't think he likes even me?"

"You'd hardly think that was possible," said Callan. "Listen - I've got a job for you."

Meres listened at once. Work was a serious business: the only real passion he knew.

A great quote for a) bantz, and b) that bit about work being Meres' 'only real passion'. Yeah, I bet.

From File on a Jolly Miller:

"How many men will you need?"

"Just Meres," said Callan.

Another one for the file of Callan asking to work with Meres, even though they claim to dislike each other. Also, lol at Meres' reaction to being told to tranquilise a dog. The story doesn't give us an idea of how Callan feels about Meres potentially being killed on that job, but I'm sure we can, ah, extrapolate...

File on a Man Called Callan is especially good for Meres and Callan/Meres, I'd say. Meres seems genuinely apologetic about his slip-up, and then he's so quietly menacing at the end...I like the reminders that Meres has no compunction about threatening and/or interrogating women. From Gallic Charmer: "She won't," Callan said. "Toby Meres is watching her - and women don't run away from Toby. Not when he's got a gun in his hand."

I think I'll take your advice regarding the Big Finish radio plays. Slashy Callan/Meres hurt/comfort? You know my likes so well :D
