Oh my God, "File on a Loving Sister" broke my heart. It really made me hate Callan. (Though I doubt anyone can beat Callan's own self-loathing at this point). I think that story ties "File on a Darling Daughter" for most tragic in the collections. Hunter's warning to Callan in the end is particularly poignant: "When you started this one, I told you that to be loved is a very powerful weapon. It applies to you too, you know." Makes me think Hunter's had personal experience. Something like this story, but where the seducer is seduced, would make for perfect Hunter/Callan/Meres idfic, don't you think?

You picked out all my favorite lines in Callan Uncovered 2! :D I giggled when Meres called Keino a "bird". Clearly, he tried (and failed) to use his flirtatious charms to suss out Keino's loyalties. And you're so right about Meres's passion for his work - several times, he's disappointed when he misses out on a fight or an interrogation. I think his taste for violence is built-in. The Callan File has this particularly insightful line about Meres: "With rare self-awareness, Meres thinks that the Section is all he and Callan are fit for."

In "File on a Jolly Miller", Callan actually doesn't seem upset when he encounters an unconscious (and possibly dead) Meres. He even thinks to himself that he wishes he could have seen Meres getting knocked out. I consider that very OOC, and I chalk it up to Mitchell's inconsistent characterization of Callan/Meres. In some of the novels, they're outright enemies, while in other stories, they're really great partners. I tend to take the TV show as my Callan/Meres canon - frenemies with an edge, but ultimately, loyal to each other when the cards are down. What do you think?

I <3 Meres playing bodyguard to Callan in "File on a Man Called Callan". It's great turnabout is fair play to the times Callan makes Meres the bait, hehehe.
