Ahahaha, didn't I tell you Callan is a slashfest? XD Callan/Meres is practically canon with the way these two flirt in season 2. Even when Meres is being a jerk, it's so clearly attention-seeking behavior reminiscent of a boy pulling a girl's pigtails. I love how he teases Callan, and Callan falls for it every time. The Worst Soldier I Ever Saw is a fine example with Meres deliberately prodding Callan when he knows Callan can't snipe back ^_^. And then the lady asks where Callan found a friend like him! Haha! I can only imagine what's going through her head, given how Meres calls Callan "darling" and leans right up to his ear.
But Meres is not always such a bad boy tease. He's genuinely sympathetic in Let's Kill Everybody and Heir Apparent, trying to cheer Callan up after all the deaths. I'm actually working on a sequel to the latter episode. And man, the ending to Death of a Hunter... Anthony Valentine's tear-filled eyes are what made a Callan/Meres shipper out of me.
What episode was the defining Callan/Meres moment for you?
I'd love to read a fic set post-The Contract. That one had a very convoluted plot, and I couldn't figure out why Meres was so laissez-faire about showing up late to save Callan's life. Did he know that Callan wasn't in real danger? Either way, his smirk as he tells Callan to return his officer's greatcoat "cleaned" really made me laugh XD. He knows exactly how to get under Callan's skin, hehehe.
I'm also thrilled to hear you'll be writing Callan/Meres for Iddy Iddy Bang Bang! That sounds like a FANTASTIC plot bunny, the perfect combination of action and angst. Does Callan know the blackmailer is after Meres? Does Hunter? What does the Section think of Meres's "bizarre tastes", as Richmond puts it in The Richmond File: Call Me Enemy? I always read it as an allusion not only to Meres's homosexual activity, but also to his sadomasochism... which would very much be career-ruining. Though given Callan's checkered past, I doubt Hunter cares unless it gets in the way of the Section's goals.
